The suspects, three Bulgarians aged 29, 30 and 50 years old, and one Afghan, 28, were taken by police to the court handcuffed and on a leash.
The men were arrested in Hungary on Friday after Austrian police discovered the dead migrants on Thursday in an abandoned delivery truck parked off a highway near the Austrian village of Parndorf, close to the Hungarian border. Many of the corpses found in the truck were so decomposed that officials say they likely had died up to two days earlier, before they ever crossed into Western Europe.
Of the four suspects, one has a Hungarian residency permit, and none has a registered address or income in Hungary, said Szabolcs Sarkozi, the Hungarian court’s spokesman.
